For Black History Month 2026, Newsline is offering a feature for each week in February to celebrate our Black forebears in the Church of the Brethren. In this issue, we celebrate the life and groundbreaking ministry of Samuel Weir, the first ordained Black Brethren elder and preacher.
Wendy McFadden will retire on July 31 as publisher of Brethren Press and executive director of Communications for the Church of the Brethren, after almost 45 years of service to the denomination.
Brethren Disaster Ministries, with leadership from Cliff Kindy, is organizing a team of skilled volunteers to serve in Pointe-au-Chien, La., from April 7-28 to rebuild a home destroyed by Hurricane Ida in 2021.
For nearly 100 years, Mechanicsburg (Pa.) Church of the Brethren has served the spiritual and material needs of the surrounding community. On May 3, the church at 301 Gale Street will mark its centennial with a morning worship service centered on its anniversary theme “Yesterday’s Vision: Today’s Strength, Tomorrow’s Hope.”
The March offering from Ventures in Christian Discipleship, a program based at McPherson (Kan.) College, will be “God’s Earth, Our Home: Engaging Creation Care through Faith.” The course will be presented by David Radcliff, director of the New Community Project. It will be held online Saturday, March 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (central time).
The Church of the Brethren Intercultural Ministries is presenting a webinar titled “Sankofa Storytelling Event” on Thursday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m. (Eastern time). “We would like to tell you a story,” said an invitation.
The Atlantic Northeast District Ministry Commission will host “Better with Less,” a three-hour online workshop designed to help congregations thrive without fulltime clergy. The event will be held Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Eastern time) via Zoom.
