On Aug. 9, Children’s Disaster Services (CDS) deployed a team of three volunteers to Lake Isabella, Calif., where they served in a Local Assistance Center (LAC) until Aug. 13. Setting up a disaster care center, the team aided the needs of 20 children.
The Summer 2024 unit of Brethren Volunteer Service (BVS), Unit 335, has completed orientation and has been assigned to project sites across the United States and in Northern Ireland. Brethren Disaster Ministries staff have requested the following grants from the Church of the Brethren’s Emergency Disaster Fund (EDF): $10,000 for a rebuilding project in York County, Pa., following Tropical Storm Ida; $15,000 to support training models and resource development by Children’s Disaster Services (CDS) partner Child Life Disaster Relief; and $5,000 to support families connected with the Maui (Hawaii) Economic Opportunity, Inc.’s Head Start center.
The Brethren Disaster Ministries Rebuilding program has exciting news to share about our work this fall! The location has now been finalized for the short-term schedule of volunteers set for Project 2 this September through November. These groups of volunteers and leaders will return to continue serving the Dawson Springs, Ky., 2021 tornado recovery.

The third to fifth grade children’s group at Annual Conference, led by Angi and Scott Harney of Elkhart, Ind., on Friday, July 5, delivered 103 blankets to the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.
“What do we do if there’s a mouse in the cabin?” asked one of the 31 youth who traveled to Camp Brethren Heights, around an hour north of the Annual Conference in Grand Rapids, for a service project, lunch, and swimming in the lake.
A grant of $7,500 from the Church of the Brethren’s Emergency Disaster Fund (EDF) has been directed by Brethren Disaster Ministries to aid 12 families in York County, Pa., who have no other means of recovery from damage by Tropical Storm Ida in 2021.
In April there is a meat canning project that brings volunteers together in Pennsylvania. The Church of the Brethren receives part of the finished product. Our Material Resources staff recently shipped three pallets, or nearly 7,000 pounds of the canned meat, to California, destined for Mexico.
