Mutual Aid Agency celebrates 140 years of faith-based insurance and mutual support

A release from MAA

In 2025, Mutual Aid Agency (MAA) proudly marks its 140th anniversary, celebrating more than a century of faith-driven service, insurance protection, and a commitment to mutual aid.

Since its founding in 1885, MAA has stood as a trusted partner to individuals, churches, and communities, growing from a small mutual aid society into a leading provider of comprehensive insurance solutions.

Founded on Brethren principles of stewardship and shared support, MAA was created to help communities recover in times of loss. Over the years, it has evolved from kitchen-table operations to a multi-regional agency, expanding coverage to include church, home, auto, renters, business, and umbrella insurance, while continuing to serve the Church of the Brethren community.

“For 140 years, MAA has been more than just an insurance provider—we have been a source of support, resilience, and care for those we serve,” said Kimberly Rutter, general manager of MAA. “This anniversary is not just about looking back at our history, but also about celebrating the ways we continue to grow and give back to our clients and communities.”

At the heart of MAA’s mission is the Program of Mutuality, ensuring that a portion of every premium supports the Brethren Mutual Aid Share Fund that provides financial assistance to individuals and families facing crisis. This unique model of mutual aid sets MAA apart and remains a core focus of the agency as it moves into the future.

Join in the celebration

Throughout 2025, MAA will commemorate this milestone with special announcements, community engagement opportunities, and historical reflections. Clients, partners, and supporters are invited to follow along, share their stories, and celebrate the impact MAA has made over the past 140 years.

More details will be shared throughout the year, with updates available in denominational communications, district newsletters, and MAA’s digital channels.
