Job Descriptions

ABODE at Sunrise Village Emergency Shelter provides transitional shelter and comprehensive support services to homeless families with children and single adults. Abode Services’ mission is to identify and coordinate ways to service the homeless by helping them move toward the goals of independence, self-help, and the ability to seek, enter, and maintain stable housing.

Abode seeks:
(A) Shelter Monitors to provide direct services to program residents at Sunrise Village. Responsibilities include staffing the front desk, engaging with donors and volunteers, answering phones, enforcing program guidelines, informally counseling residents, managing chores, and completing data entry. Shelter Monitors ensure the facility is clean, safe, and well maintained. Sunrise Village Shelter is a 24-hour shelter, and volunteers will work some weekends and evenings to fit project needs.

  • Implement and operate Shelter program procedures including answering telephone lines and oversee front desk activities; greet visitors and volunteers; and problem solve with shelter participants. 
  • Inspect facility; sign in participants; maintain and enforce shelter guidelines; document resident behavior and needs as well as program issues using logbook and incidents report; oversee proper chore implementation including cleaning up and maintenance of facility. 
  • Respond to participants’ requests, rendering assistance as possible; respond to and resolve conflicts and crisis situations.
  • Effectively communicate with service coordinators, shelter coordinator, and shelter manager on critical incidents, observed resident behaviors, and activities around the shelter during scheduled shifts. 
  • Maintain standardized operating procedures, safety of participants, program integrity, customer service standards, professional boundaries, and a supportive and caring environment.
  • Assist with unit turnover including cleaning of alcoves/rooms, along with daily cleaning needs of the shelter in the absence of residents completing chores. 
  • Communicate with staff and all participants in a non-judgmental manner; work cooperatively with all agency staff. 

Volunteers should have computer skills, flexibility, sensitivity, and an understanding of good customer service skills.

(B) A Kitchen Assistant to work directly with the Kitchen Coordinator to maintain the operations of the kitchen, dining rooms, and food pantry at Sunrise Village. Tasks include ensuring that all procedures for kitchen/food safety are maintained, that supplies are stocked, and that equipment is operational. This position assists with quality control and inventory of food, organization of food pantries, and the resident lunch bag program. This position also assists the meal group volunteers as needed.
The volunteer should be flexible and have an understanding of good customer service skills. Experience with food preparation is a plus but not required. SafeServFood training is required and will be provided by Abode Services. Volunteers will need to work some weekends and evenings to fit project needs.
