Christ House is a 24-hour residential medical facility for men experiencing homelessness in Washington, DC. The mission of Christ House is to provide comprehensive and compassionate care for people experiencing homelessness with acute medical needs in the District of Columbia and to offer assistance in addressing critical issues to help break the cycle of homelessness. All volunteers must be over 21 years old, and we strongly encourage recent college graduates to apply.

Job Descriptions

(A) The Nurse will work alongside a dedicated clinical staff who provides holistic services and promotes healing for our patients. Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, the Nurse provides holistic nursing support, patient care, and medication management. In collaboration with clinical and support staff, the Nurse helps manage medical issues and coordinate with the care team to address the multiple issues that contribute to homelessness. This role requires volunteers to be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and licensed as an RN in DC.

(B) The Respite Care Assistant works alongside a dedicated clinical staff who provides holistic services and promotes healing for our patients. Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, the Respite Care Assistant is responsible for providing basic patient care, including assistance with activities of daily living and care of the environment. Bachelor’s degree and 1+ year of direct patient care or experience working with the medically underserved is preferred.

(C) The Social Services Assistant supports the case management functions on the medical respite unit. Under the supervision of the Case Manager, the Social Services Assistant assists with tasks related to patient intake on the respite unit, assists with verification of insurance coverage, coordinates and accompanies patients to appointments, and performs other duties as assigned. Bachelor’s degree is required with a preference for a degree in Social Services.

(D) The Patient Activities Coordinator plans and coordinates activities that provide opportunities for community building, creative expression, positive social interaction, leisure, education and diversion as a means to enhance the quality of patients’ lives. The Patient Activities Coordinator also accompanies and transports patients to appointments, provides rotating coverage at the front desk, and assists the Development and Administrative offices with various tasks as needed. Bachelor’s degree preferred, but not required (we value life experience too!). Driver’s license is strongly preferred.
