SPARK is a non-profit organization with a focus on service-learning and community-building work in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. SPARK designs and manages hands-on opportunities for groups of 10-150 people to serve and learn about their service. Partnership is key to the work. Through partnering with local organizations and sacred spaces SPARK fans community’s flame by serving and meeting every person where they are. SPARK stands for Share Peace and Rekindle Kindness. Here is how we live this out: We believe that Sharing resources and relationships spark true community. Working for Peace sparks our work to be a service-based organization. While And is a conjunction, it is what sparks our work toward belonging for all. Rekindling is powerful, we work to reignite sharing, peace and Kindness.

Create and maintain a healthy partnership with SPARK’s office partner, Sherwood Forest UMC through attending congregation functions, meals and occasional worship services. Support SPARK’s fiscal sponsee initiatives {Community Coat Closet, REGROW and Mutual Aid) by attending monthly meetings, support communication, project leadership and event attendance. Coordinate social media and monthly newsletter communication with the community. Provide service-learning project leadership and support on-site for groups.

Winston-Salem, also known as the City of Arts and Innovation is a medium-sized city in Forsyth County, North Carolina and its county seat. It is the fifth largest city in NC. Winston-Salem is the home of Krispy Kreme and Texas Pete. Winston-Salem is home to Nascar’s longest-running weekly track known as The Madhouse. Winston-Salem is 1.5 hours from both Charlotte and the Raleigh/Durham area. It’s home to Wake Forest University and Winston-Salem State University. It’s located at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and has many hiking opportunities available, while a beach is only 3 hours away. It has recently been said by a community leader that “Winston-Salem is small enough to know each other and large enough to pull resources together for people.”

What SPARK is looking for in a volunteer: Self-starter, organized, good communicator who is willing to ask questions, someone who values a spirit of welcome and belonging, enjoys interacting with intergenerational and differently-abled and minded community members, willing to learn and lead on-site projects.

The SPARK office and many other partnering organizations are handicap accessible. The SPARK truck doesn’t have Automobile Adaptive Equipment (AAE).
