Brethren Academy Updates Its List of Upcoming Courses

The Brethren Academy for Ministerial Leadership has updated its upcoming courses, which include a course that incorporates the Ministers’ Association event in advance of the Church of the Brethren Annual Conference in Charlotte, N.C., beginning in late June.

‘Brethren Life and Thought’ Announces Special Issue on Alexander Mack Jr.

The Brethren Journal Association announces publication of “The Life and Influence of Alexander Mack Jr.: Pietist and Anabaptist Intersections in Pennsylvania” featuring most of the papers presented at the Young Center Conference on Alexander Mack Jr. in 2012. In related news, Bethany Seminary trustees approved revised Articles of Organization for the Brethren Journal Association. On July 1, during the association’s lunch and annual meeting at Annual Conference in Charlotte, N.C., members will have opportunity to discuss the articles and add their affirmation.

Thirteen to Graduate from Bethany Theological Seminary

Bethany Theological Seminary will hold its 108th commencement in Nicarry Chapel on the seminary campus in Richmond, Ind., at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 11. Eleven master of divinity degrees will be conferred along with one master of arts degree and one Certificate of Achievement in Theological Studies. Commencement speaker will be J. Nelson Kraybill, lead pastor at Prairie Street Mennonite Church in Elkhart, Ind., and president-elect of Mennonite World Conference.

Brethren Journal Association Announces New Editor

The Advisory Board of the Brethren Journal Association, in partnership with Bethany Theological Seminary, announces that Denise Kettering-Lane has been named the new editor for “Brethren Life and Thought.”

Brethren Academy Program Receives Funding from Wieand Trust, Gift Funds New Education Opportunities at Bethany

A gift from the David J. and Mary Elizabeth Wieand Trust is helping to start a new “Sustaining Ministerial Excellence: Advanced Seminar” at the Brethren Academy for Ministerial Leadership. In related news, Bethany Seminary announces that two new educational initiatives will be supported by a major gift from the estate of Mary Elizabeth Wertz Wieand. This gift comes through the David J. and Mary Elizabeth Wieand Trust, established by a family whose roots go back to the founding of the seminary.

Peace Witness Ministries Staff Organize Webinar on ‘Just Peace’

As part of his work as joint staff with the National Council of Churches (NCC), Nathan Hosler has organized a webinar on March 19 at 12 noon on the “Ecumenical Call to Just Peace.” Hosler is director of Peace Witness Ministries for the Church of the Brethren, working out of Washington, D.C. This webinar will feature presenters from four distinct streams of church life.

Bethany Seminary Announces New Presidential Leadership

The Bethany Theological Seminary Board of Trustees has announced that Jeffrey W. Carter of Manassas, Va., has accepted the call to serve as the seminary’s tenth president, beginning July 1. “The board of trustees is very pleased that someone with Dr. Carter’s commitment, talents, and background answered the call to the leadership of Bethany,” stated Lynn Myers, chair of the board.

Fifth Presidential Forum to Be Held at Bethany Seminary

Bethany Theological Seminary will hold its fifth Presidential Forum on April 5 and 6, 2013, at the Bethany campus in Richmond, Ind. The forum’s theme, “The Bible in Our Bones: Telling and Living the Stories of Our Faith,” invites all to encounter God’s word with fresh eyes and to live and share its life-giving messages with insight and integrity. Scholars, storytellers, artists, and other ministerial leaders will guide this exploration of biblical story through worship, instruction, and reflection.
