Lisa Crouch has resigned as associate director of Children’s Disaster Services (CDS), a ministry of Brethren Disaster Ministries and the Church of the Brethren. She will conclude her work at the Brethren Service Center in New Windsor, Md., on March 31.
Crouch has been working with CDS for more than four years, since Aug. 27, 2018. Her first solo week in the job, that September, coincided with Hurricane Florence’s landfall on the North Carolina coast. She noted in a farewell message to CDS volunteers that “I should have known it was going to be a wild ride.”
During her tenure, she has led CDS in responding to numerous disasters, organizing the response of volunteer teams to aid children and families in many different places across the country. She helped adapt the CDS model to pandemic conditions with the development of an “Individual Kit of Comfort” as an alternative for in-person care to children affected by disasters early on during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her work has included oversight of the CDS training workshop program, and interaction with various partner organizations. The Critical Response Childcare (CRC) team deployed during her time with the program, including to Texas last year after the Uvalde school shooting.
Her future plans are to work directly with children again. She recently completed a master of arts degree in education focused on trauma and resilience.
