In April there is a meat canning project that brings volunteers together in Pennsylvania. The Church of the Brethren receives part of the finished product. Our Material Resources staff recently shipped three pallets, or nearly 7,000 pounds of the canned meat, to California, destined for Mexico.
In addition, another 150 cartons of canned meat were marked for food kitchens in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. People from each of these sites came to the Material Resources facility to pick up their portion to use in their ministry. It was good to see folks again and know that this helpful program continues.
In other recent shipments, Lutheran World Relief quilts and kits were loaded for shipment to Ukraine and Angola including six 40-foot containers for Angola filled with 2,773 bales and cartons shipped through New Jersey due to the Baltimore Port being closed. This was a difficult shipment due to the distance and the extra strain on the New Jersey port trying to handle Baltimore containers in addition to their normal flow of work. The four 40-foot containers for Ukraine contained 1,650 bales and cartons, and it was moved through the Baltimore port in a much smoother process.
We are in the midst of pick ups of Church World Service (CWS) donations from Maine to North Carolina, just in time to be available for what could be a busy weather-related disaster period. Most needed items are the period packs and hygiene kits. Contents and instructions for assembling these kits can be found online at www.cwskits.org
