Project Description:

The China Center for Asia Pacific is a key research facility established by the International Potato Center (CIP) in collaboration with the Chinese government. CCCAP focuses on agricultural research, known particularly for its significant role in potato and other root crop production research. CCCAP aims to help enhance food security in the region, and address climate change and population growth through agricultural innovation.

Job Title: Co-Director

Duties and Responsibilities:

The volunteer will work on community-based participatory breeding activities from its research facilities We seek an individual who can work across cultures and languages, uniting farmers in a common purpose. The individual must respect Chinese and international cultures and have a natural humility while working with farmers in the field and with scientists and students at the research facilities. This position will be unique in its role, responsibilities, and undertaking, as it will require initiating a mechanism to work with farmers, scientists and students to develop a new and as-yet-untried method of working in the community. The individual is expected to bring novel ideas and have a gritty work ethic. The individual will be responsible for supervising African students working on FAO- funded projects that will have projects on the farmers’ land related to the participatory breeding activities.

Requirements:

Someone with a Master of Science or Ph.D. in the field is desired, with a specialty in breeding, biology, agriculture, or related fields. Married couples are welcome. The volunteer should have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with a wide range of individuals, strong team-building skills, be a humble and fearless leader and an innovator. Desired skills (some may be learned on the job) include understanding of potato breeding and genetics, ability to quickly assess and interpret information, knowledge of breeding traits necessary for quality, and knowledge of biotic and abiotic plant stresses.
