The main role of a house assistant in L’Arche is to live and build community by creating a home with people who have an intellectual disability and with the other assistants in the house in which you are living. L’Arche is first and foremost a community, where the emphasis is on sharing life as opposed to being cared for or giving care. The only requirement to serve as an assistant is a willingness to learn and an open attitude.

Job Descriptions

L’Arche Cork consists of five houses where people with intellectual disabilities live together in community with volunteer Assistants. We also have a purpose-built center where the full community can gather and where we run our day programme which includes candle-making, weaving, woodwork, jewelry-making, printing, life-skills, cookery, music, and gardening. L’Arche Cork is also working towards opening a community café in 2022 where we are hoping to share our culinary skills with our local community.
The main role of a house assistant in L’Arche is to live and build community by creating a home with people who have an intellectual disability and with the other assistants in the house in which you are living. L’Arche is first and foremost a community, where the emphasis is on sharing life as opposed to being cared for or giving care. As an assistant you are asked to enter into real, respectful, and meaningful relationships with both the residents and assistants in your house. The only requirement to serve as an assistant is a willingness to learn and an open attitude. We have a strong volunteer programme and a thriving community of over 20 assistants from all over the world.
