Five Church of the Brethren congregations in Pennsylvania are joining together to organize and sponsor “PeaceFest: Turning Communities Toward Peace” on Saturday, Sept. 19—the weekend closest to the International Day of Peace. This event is free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lititz Church of the Brethren.
The congregations—Mountville, York First, Lititz, Elizabethtown, and Lancaster—have been planning the event for about a year. Said an announcement: “PeaceFest is a family-friendly event designed to bring people together in hope, education, fellowship, and action around a shared vision of a more peaceful world. Sponsored by the Peace and Justice Committees of local Church of the Brethren congregations, PeaceFest reflects a longstanding commitment to promoting peace, justice, and nonviolence within our communities.”
Shane Claiborne, a speaker, activist, best-selling author, and co-founder of RAWtools, will be the keynote speaker. A demonstrations by RawTools will forge handguns into garden tools. Musicians Tim Craven and Jesse Eisenbise will perform. Attendees can enjoy food trucks, music, face painting, the Tree House Playground, and a variety of hands-on activities for all ages. Participants are encouraged to bring donations for the Lititz Warwick Community Chest Food Bank.
