José Calleja Otero has resigned as executive minister for the Church of the Brethren’s Puerto Rico District, effective Dec. 6. He has served in leadership of the district for eight and a half years, since he began as the district’s first executive on July 12, 2015. In July that year, the Puerto Rico District was officially welcomed by the Annual Conference as the Church of the Brethren’s 24th district.
During his tenure, Otero has given dedicated commitment to overseeing and encouraging the spiritual health and development of the congregations in Puerto Rico. He has served as a member of the Ministry Issues Committee of the Council of District Executives and has been the council’s representative to the denomination’s Mission and Ministries Planning Council.
In previous roles in the church he was team pastor at the congregation in Morovis, and he also has worked for Hogar CREA Inc., an institution working with drug addiction. He holds degrees from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico and the Theological Institute of the Church of the Brethren in Puerto Rico, where he has been a professor of New Testament.
