Under Their Own Vine & Fig Tree Initiative

Moving toward self-funding global churches

Everyone will sit under their own vine
and under their own fig tree,
and no one will make them afraid,
for the Lord Almighty has spoken
—Micah 4:4

Purpose

To fulfill the 2018 Annual Conference mandate to develop a Global Church of the Brethren Communion that is self-propagating, self-governing and self-financing.

Reality Check

Our global churches are already making strong progress in becoming self-propagating and self-governing. The next strategic step is to strengthen self-financing by building their capacity to support their own ministries sustainably.

Equity, Dignity and Interdependence

  • Moving away from dependency is a move toward mutuality, interdependency and becoming partners.
  • Mission is from everywhere to everyone

Our goal is simple yet transformative: Work alongside global churches to establish localized income-generation plans that will fully fund their denominations within the next 5 years, entirely free from US financial dependency.

Empowering Local Communities to Thrive

We achieve this by practicing sustainable community development:

  • Center Local Well-Being: Every project utilizes local expertise, honors local culture, and prioritizes the community’s health.
  • Agriculture-Based Projects: We utilize the Global Food Initiative funds to jumpstart sustainable farming and agricultural income.
  • Diverse Enterprises: We utilize the Global Development Fund to support retail, services, and all other local business types.
  • Sustainable Growth: We start small, build a firm foundation, and scale up!
