Office of Public Witness Helps Plan Conference on Drone Warfare

The Church of the Brethren Office of Public Witness is helping to plan an upcoming conference on drone warfare. The event is scheduled for Jan. 23-25 at Princeton (N.J.) Theological Seminary. “We want to reach out to see if any Brethren would be interested in attending and also let Brethren know that the conference is happening to raise awareness about the issue,” reported Bryan Hanger, advocacy assistant at the Office of Public Witness.

Musa Mambula of EYN to Speak at Chiques Church of the Brethren About Nigeria Persecution

Chiques Church of the Brethren in Manheim, Pa., will host a presentation by Nigerian Brethren leader Musa Mambula on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. Mambula is a writer, educator, and current National Spiritual Advisor for Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN, the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria). He will speak about the persecution of Christians by Boko Haram terrorists in northern Nigeria and the church’s response. The evening will conclude with a time of prayer.

General Secretary and Public Witness Staff Reiterate Support for Nonviolent Measures in Syria and Iraq, CPTer Comments from Iraqi Kurdistan

In a week when US President Barack Obama has announced new air strikes on Islamic State in Syria by a coalition of the US military and several Arab nations, Church of the Brethren general secretary Stan Noffsinger and the denomination’s Office of Public Witness have reiterated a commitment to nonviolent means of change in Syria and Iraq.

Peace Day Events Are Planned by Church of the Brethren and Other Groups

Church of the Brethren congregations and other groups in many different communities are planning worship services, witnesses, prayer vigils, and even theater performances to celebrate the International Day of Prayer for Peace on Sunday, Sept. 21. A Peace Day campaign by On Earth Peace helps connect the Church of the Brethren and others to the annual event, offers resources, and collects an online listing of events and groups that are participating. Here are just a few of the Peace Day events in the works:

Atlantic Southeast District Holds Eighth Annual Family Peace Camp

The 8th Annual Family Peace Camp in Atlantic Southeast District was held at Ithiel Camp and Retreat Center in central Florida on Aug. 29-31. The theme for the event, which was held just a few miles from Disney World, was “Living in the Magic Kin-dom.”

Prayer Is Requested as EYN Temporarily Closes Kulp Bible College in Face of Boko Haram Advance

Prayer is requested for the students and staff of Kulp Bible College (KBC), and the leadership of Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN, the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria), as the decision has been made to temporarily close the college. Students will be leaving for other areas of the country, and headquarters staff also may be making ready to leave as Boko Haram forces advance to within 50 kilometers of the EYN headquarters.
