Church of the Brethren representative attends CMEP meeting on Gaza

The Office of Peacebuilding and Policy recently sent a Church of the Brethren representative to attend a meeting of Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP) on the topic of the genocide in Gaza. Andrew Hamilton, executive minister of the Church of the Brethren’s Southeastern District, represented the denomination at the meeting.

The Church of the Brethren is a member denomination of CMEP, an organization that promotes a comprehensive resolution to conflicts in the Middle East, mobilizing Christians in the United States to advocate for equality, human rights, security, and justice for Israelis, Palestinians, and all people of the Middle East.

Hamilton provided the following brief outline of the meeting’s purpose and its outcome:

“On July 29, Churches for Middle East Peace invited about 150 delegates from numerous Christian traditions for a two-day meeting at the Carter Center in Atlanta, Ga. The purpose of the meeting was to engage in strategic planning for a concerted effort to end the genocide in Gaza.

“The delegation heard first-hand reports of the events taking place in Gaza and the forced starvation of its population. Following a keynote address, the delegates were separated into three primary working groups: grassroots organization, church and denominational engagement, and government engagement/advocacy. Each group was tasked with making a plan that recognizes the immediacy that these events require. By the end of day two, the groups had established the framework and timeline of a plan. The work will continue outside of the meeting for the coming days, and details of the plan will be released soon.”
