Updated covenant agreements for three Annual Conference agencies came before the delegates this year. In 2022, Annual Conference approved the Update Regarding Polity for Annual Conference Agencies. Part of this new polity required establishment of covenant agreements between Standing Committee and any organizations wishing to be Annual Conference agencies.
The definition of an agency, as listed in the introduction to this item in the Annual Conference book, is “an organization recognized by Annual Conference which provides a ministry on behalf of the Church of the Brethren that Annual Conference cannot or does not choose to provide or accomplish itself.” Recognized agencies are expected to report to Annual Conference, and to exhibit and provide equipping sessions. They are authorized to call themselves an agency of the Church of the Brethren as they identify themselves to the public.
Along with recognition as an agency of the church, the organization also works with Standing Committee to form a covenant acknowledging the agency’s organizational structure and clarifying expectations on how their partnership with the church will work.
Agency status was approved for Bethany Theological Seminary on Friday, July 4, 2025, after the delegate body received the seminary’s report.
