Freeport (Ill.) Church of the Brethren has been committed to “Jesus in the Neighborhood” since it became the theme for Church of the Brethren a few years ago. But it was only a few weeks ago that we were able to act on it and make it a reality for our church.
We are a fairly vibrant church, serving God through serving the community in several ways. On Saturday, May 18, our church hosted the event “Bring Jesus to the Neighborhood,” from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.–but we let it go on till 2 p.m. because the kids were enjoying themselves so much!
The Witness Commission and the Nurture Commission organized this event for children with a huge inflatable obstacle course, hopscotch, ring toss, bean bag toss, bucket ball, and sidewalk chalk for children to draw their own creations. And they did! The children enjoyed it all.
There was delicious food for the kids as well as the adults who accompanied the kids and some of them took food home too, which warmed our hearts.
There were around 30-35 children playing around the parking lot! We were blessed!
Matthew 28:19 says, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” This is a start! We have sowed the seed and started the process. Now we will let God water and make the effort bloom and bring fruit for the Kingdom of God!
