Washington City Church of the Brethren in Washington, D.C. installed solar panels on their roof to generate electricity to make the church building more sustainable. This installation is part of the congregation’s commitment to “Seek justice, wholeness, and community through the Gospel of Jesus.”
This solar installation was made possible through Washington D.C. policies and incentives to increase renewable energy use across the city. Pastors Jenn and Nate Hosler learned about the program for non-residential buildings while Jenn spoke on a local panel about their experience installing solar on their home. The Washington City also supports local, national, and international efforts through providing space for the denomination’s Office of Peacebuilding and Policy. In addition to these efforts, the church has a small community garden and hopes to transition its small lawn and flower beds to pollinator and natural vegetation.
In the near future, Brethren House (a ministry of Washington City) will also have solar panels and other green improvements as part of a larger renovation effort.
