Bringing peace and justice ministries into the neighborhood by providing space

Harrisburg (Pa.) First Church of the Brethren has found that we can bring peace and justice ministries into our neighborhood by providing space in our building for organizations that will provide such services.

For example, “Gather the Spirit for Justice” each Saturday, from 9-11 a.m., uses our fellowship hall and kitchen to provide free breakfasts to anyone who comes. During breakfast, they also give out personal hygiene items and help people get or renew their identification papers. On a monthly basis, other organizations such as the Red Cross have information tables there. At 10 a.m., those who wish to learn Spanish or English go to one of our classrooms where they engage in conversation in both languages, with the help of teachers.

Over the years, we have brought GED classes, Alcoholics Anonymous support groups, women’s support groups, Friday Food Distribution in partnership with South Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, and others to serve our community by providing ministry space.

Our congregation does not have the staff nor membership that could provide these ministries. But by welcoming other organizations into our building, we can help provide more peace and justice ministries for our neighborhood.
