Intercultural Ministries imagines a beloved community vision that inspires and challenges us

By Founa A. Badet, Church of the Brethren Intercultural Ministries

As we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I dream of a day when we embrace discomfort as part of our sacred calling to live in unity—many stories, one Spirit, one body in Christ. Hope is born when love refuses to remain silent. Justice, after all, is love made visible, and kindness is faith in action.

True humility gives us the strength to listen, learn, and walk together. The beloved community is not ours to create alone; it is God’s work already unfolding, inviting us to join. Intercultural ministry calls us to slow down, listen deeply, repent when needed, and walk together, trusting the Holy Spirit to lead. History reminds us that Dr. King never allowed despair to have the final word. His hope was anchored in God—and so is ours, because Christ is our peace, our bridge, and our future.

The dream of beloved community is not behind it, but ahead. It lives in every act of welcome, every table widened, every voice honored. Christ is our peace. Love is our calling. And together, with God’s help, we will keep building hope. Dream like Martin!
