CDS Critical Response Childcare teams heading to Texas

In response to a request from the Red Cross, Children’s Disaster Services (CDS) is sending two Critical Response Childcare teams to Texas to care for children affected by last weekend’s flash flooding. One team of four has arrived in Kerrville. The other team of four will be leaving in the next few days.

CDS is a Church of the Brethren ministry that is part of Brethren Disaster Ministries. The Critical Response Childcare team is a group of experienced CDS volunteers who have received additional training that prepares them to work with children after a mass casualty event. The presence of a compassionate caregiver, along with carefully selected play activities, has a significant impact on the recovery of a child who has experienced the trauma of such a loss.

The Brethren Disaster Ministries staff shared this prayer request: “Please keep our volunteers in your prayers as well as others who are responding to this heart-wrenching disaster. And keep in prayer the families who have lost loved ones or whose loved ones are still missing.”

More than 100 people have died in the catastrophic flooding along the Guadalupe River in central Texas, including at least 28 children, and the search continues for 160 people who are still believed to be missing, according to media reports. At an all-girls Christian summer camp named Camp Mystic, at least 27 children and counselors were killed.

Brethren Disaster Ministries and CDS staff continue to monitor the situation in Texas through communications with Texas VOAD (Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster), local emergency management, and trusted partners to determine how best to respond in both the short and long-term.
