Breaking Down Barriers Study Committee gets another year

By Frances Townsend

The study committee formed in response to the query on Breaking Down Barriers–Increasing Access to Denominational Events has been granted another year to finalize their report and bring recommendations to Annual Conference.

The query was passed at Annual Conference in 2022. The committee has been studying how to make Annual Conference and other denominational activities easier for all church members to participate in. As stated in the 2022 Standing Committee recommendation that created the committee, they have considered the theological, philosophical, and practical implications of access, but they still need to complete the feasibility study.

The study committee’s 2024 interim report includes many pages outlining their work and listing both barriers and possible solutions. They gathered information from as many sources as possible–from previous Annual Conference statements to surveys and focus groups. Much attention was given to how technology can either create barriers or remove them.
