Thursday at NYC – ‘Journey’

“These are the things you must insist on and teach. Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Until I arrive, give attention to the public reading of scripture, to exhorting, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift that is in you” (1 Timothy 4:11-14a).

Quotable quotes

“Good morning church! It has been a good week! Amen?”
— Jeff Carter, as he began his remarks in the morning worship service. The NYCers responded, “Amen!” Telling the story of his experiences training for a marathon, he went on to compare the NYC week with running: “We have been sprinting all week. The Christian life is not a sprint. It is a marathon. A marathon in which we don’t run alone.”

Youth clasp hands during the closing blessing for NYC 2014

“In the Church of the Brethren, we have a ministry of the heart…and we ask, what is the mind of Christ? …But we also ahve a ministry of the hand, reaching out in compassion to the world, to the entire world…. A ministry of the heart, and a ministry of the hand.”
— Bethany Seminary president Jeff Carter, in the closing message of NYC 2014.

“The church is about being heaven here on earth.”
— Josh Brockway, director of Spiritual Life and Discipleship for the Church of the Brethren, giving a devotional thought during the closing worship. He commented that this concept is found in the Lord’s Prayer, when we pray, “Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.” Keynote speaker Jarrod McKenna had led the congregation in the Lord’s Prayer the evening before.

The day’s schedule

On this the closing day of NYC 2014, morning worship focused on an appropriate theme: “Journey.” Youth gathered for a final time of worship, singing, prayer, and blessing in the Moby Arena on the CSU campus, led by Bethany Seminary president Jeff Carter. Then everyone packed up to head back home.
