“Annual Brethren auction scheduled,” Lebanon (Pa.) Daily News (Sept. 19, 2011) – The 35th annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center and Fairgrounds on Friday and Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m. The annual event is one of the largest disaster-relief auctions in the United States, run entirely by volunteers and attracting 10,000 people. “Dunker Church service reflects on past, present,” Herald-Mail, (Sept. 18, 2011) – A Church of the Brethren official spoke Sunday about the large amount of money the United States spends on war and the associated “weapons of death.” But there can be a new way of life through peace found in Jesus Christ, Stanley J. Star Democrat, Easton, Md. (Sept. 18, 2011) – A reflection by editors on 9/11 events in Easton, Md., including a “We Remember” gathering at Easton Church of the Brethren for an evening interfaith service of prayer and music. Twenty-two ministers from a variety of faiths from throughout Talbot County were in attendance, along with choirs from St. Luke’s United Methodist Church and the Iglesia Evangelica Emanuel Praise Group of Easton. “Cherished memories: Quilts to be displayed in Freeport churches,” Journal-Standard (Sept. 18, 2011) – On Sept. 24 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. the sanctuaries of five local churches in Freeport, Ill., including the Church of the Brethren, will be showing a treasury of unique quilts. There will be about 350 quilts on exhibit, all connected to cherished memories of past and present generations. This event is part of the Northern Illinois Quilt Fest 2011. $5 for admission and a guidebook. Proceeds benefit the Freeport Area Church Cooperative, a coalition of churches and organizations working to meet human and spiritual needs of people in the Freeport area. “Staunton prayer event to focus on peace and diversity,” Staunton (Va.) News Leader (Sept. 17, 2011) – Figuring a church vigil was too small for an international prayer event, author Nick Patler has expanded local plans beyond his church and his faith. Patler is organizing a 90-minute local program for the International Day of Prayer for Peace that’s set to include people from eight different faith organizations, those from no religion at all, and Mary Baldwin College. When Staunton Church of the Brethren asked Patler to head its peace committee, his responsibilities included the congregation’s part in the global observance. “Professor to speak Sunday at Easton Church of the Brethren on 9/11, peace,” Star Democrat, Easton, Md. (Sept. 16, 2011) – Scott Holland, who directs the Peace Studies Program at Bethany Theological Seminary in Richmond, Ind., addressed the topic “Civil Religion and Seeking Cultures of Peace in the Shadows of 9/11” at Easton (Md.) Church of the Brethren on Sunday, Sept. 18. “New hymnals to be dedicated at Edgewood Church,” Carroll County (Md.) Times (Sept. 16, 2011) – When Edgewood Church of the Brethren hosts a hymn sing at 7 p.m. Sept. 25, featured performers will include Virgil Cain, the women’s quartet Just Because, Bill Knill, the Ecker Sisters, Union Bridge Church of the Brethren Praise Group, and Tina Grimes. “Girl Scout troop beautifies church to earn Bronze Award,” Roanoke (Va.) Times (Sept. 16, 2011) – To beautify their meeting place, eight members of Girl Scout Junior Troop 62 at Peters Creek Church of the Brethren gathered some volunteers, landscaping material, donations, and advice, and went to work on landscaping at the church’s parsonage. Obituary: Donne D. Tammel, Post Bulletin, Rochester, Minn. (Sept. 16, 2011) – Donne D. Tammel, 85, passed away at home on Sept. 14. He was a lifetime member of Root River Church of the Brethren in rural Preston, Minn. He was a longtime dairy farmer and a member of the Fillmore County Pork Producers and received dairy and soil conservation awards. He hosted the Dam-0-Rama in 1958 and was extremely proud of his Century Farm. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marilyn. Obituary: Carmen S. Davis, Staunton (Va.) News Leader (Sept. 13, 2011) – Carmen Samuel Davis, 88, husband of Peggy (Gurley) Davis, died Sept. 10 at Augusta Health. He was a member of Staunton (Va.) Church of the Brethren, served as a volunteer dispatcher for the Staunton Augusta Rescue Squad, fFor 61 years was a member of Beverly Manor Ruritan Club, and secretary of Augusta County Farm Bureau. Prior to retirement he was employed by the Farm Bureau and was one of the founding agents for Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Burdine Hyden Davis. “Church helps neighbors hit by flood,” Lebanon (Pa.) Daily News (Sept 12, 2011) – Instead of holding a regular Sunday service on Sept. 11, about 85 members of Annville (Pa.) Church of the Brethren gathered for a short worship service early that day, and then fanned out with mops, shop vacs and sheer muscle to assist with flood cleanup. “9/11 Remembrance: Easton services mark attack anniversary,” Star Democrat, Easton, Md. (Sept. 12, 2011) – One of two services held in Easton, Md., on Sunday night marking the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 was an interfaith service hosted by Easton Church of the Brethren. The service brought 22 clergy members together for prayers and music that focused on unity, compassion, and peace. “On that day of human carnage, Yours was the first heart to break,” said Rev. Mary Garner, of Christ Episcopal Church in St. Michaels. “Form us as people determined to heal wounds rather than inflict them.” Several clergy members cautioned against holding anger and seeking retribution for what happened, instead calling for compassion and love. “Faiths’ similarities celebrated in Waynesboro 9/11 service,” Public Opinion, Chambersburg, Pa. (Sept. 12, 2011) – Representatives of the Christian, Hindu, and Muslim faiths prayed together at the interfaith ceremony “10 Years Since 9/11: Lessons in Love and Unity” hosted by Trinity United Church of God in Waynesboro, Pa., on Sunday. Obituary: Myrtle M. Ellinger, News Leader, Staunton, Va. (Sept. 12, 2011) – Myrtle “Sugie” Mae Morris Ellinger, 82, of Crimora, Va., died Sept. 11 after a brief illness. For many years, she was an active member and secretary at Forest Chapel Church of the Brethren in Crimora. She retired in 1982 from Wilson Trucking, where she had worked for 33 years, and after retiring she worked part-time at The Village Market in Crimora and Shenandoah Nursing Home in Fishersville. Obituary: Violet F. McQuiston, Kokomo (Ind.) Perspective (Sept. 12, 2011) – Violet F. McQuiston, 83, of Kokomo, Ind., passed away Sept. 10 at Howard Regional Health Systems. She was a lifetime member and deacon of Kokomo Church of the Brethren. She served in her local community by teaching cooking lessons at local nursing homes, and volunteering at the Logansport State Hospital. On Sept. 29, 1945, she married Gilbert R.
