Church of the Brethren gathered for a short worship service early that day, and then fanned out with mops, shop vacs and sheer muscle to assist with flood cleanup. “9/11 Remembrance: Easton services mark attack anniversary,” Star Democrat,Easton, Md. (Sept. 12, 2011) – One of two services held in Easton, Md., on Sunday night marking the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 was an interfaith service hosted by Easton Church of the Brethren. The service brought 22 clergy members together for prayers and music that focused on unity, compassion, and peace. “On that day of human carnage, Yours was the first heart to break,” said Rev. “Faiths’ similarities celebrated in Waynesboro 9/11 service,” Public Opinion, Chambersburg, Pa. (Sept. 12, 2011) – Representatives of the Christian, Hindu, and Muslim faiths prayed together at the interfaith ceremony “10 Years Since 9/11: Lessons in Love and Unity” hosted by Trinity United Church of God in Waynesboro, Pa., on Sunday. Obituary: Myrtle M. Ellinger, News Leader, Staunton, Va. (Sept. 12, 2011) – Myrtle “Sugie” Mae Morris Ellinger, 82, of Crimora, Va., died Sept. 11 after a brief illness. For many years, she was an active member and secretary at Forest Chapel Church of the Brethren in Crimora. She retired in 1982 from Wilson Trucking, where she had worked for 33 years, and after retiring she worked part-time at The Village Market in Crimora and Shenandoah Nursing Home in Fishersville. Obituary: Violet F. McQuiston, Kokomo (Ind.) Perspective (Sept. 12, 2011) – Violet F. McQuiston, 83, of Kokomo, Ind., passed away Sept. 10 at Howard Regional Health Systems. She was a lifetime member and deacon of Kokomo Church of the Brethren. She served in her local community by teaching cooking lessons at local nursing homes, and volunteering at the Logansport State Hospital. On Sept. 29, 1945, she married Gilbert R. Obituary: Tommy Weaver, Lexington (Ky.) Dispatch (Sept. 12, 2011) – Harry Columbus “Tommy” Weaver, 70, died Sept. 11 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House in Winston-Salem. Obituary: Mary E. Richards, Palladium-Item, Richmond, Ind. (Sept. 8, 2011) – Mary Elizabeth Blankenship Richards, 98, of Whitehouse, Texas, and formerly of Preble County, Ohio, went home to be with her Lord on Sept. 7. She was a member of Prices Creek Church of the Brethren for 60 years, where she was involved in all activities of the church, especially the ministry at the Brethren Retirement Community in Greenville, Ohio. She was an inspector at Clifton Shirt Co. in Eaton for 20 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Esta L. Richards, who passed away in 1968. “Freeport Church of the Brethren to host bazaar, luncheon and quilt show,” Freeport (Ill.) Journal-Standard (Sept. 8, 2011) – Freeport (Ill.) “Clergy to join musicians for 9/11 commemoration,” Star Democrat, Easton, Md. (Sept. 7, 2011) – Easton (Md.) Church of the Brethren hosted a commemorative service for the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, open to all area residents. The service also remembered the first responders who gave their lives in the line of duty. The evening of prayer and music involved 22 members of the area clergy, musicians, and representatives of first responders from the Maryland State Police, Easton Volunteer Fire Department, and Easton Police Department. Obituary: Wilbur K. Back, News Leader, Staunton, Va. (Sept. 7, 2011) – Wilbur Kennie “Pops” Back, 78, of Staunton, Va., passed away on Sept. 6 at his residence. He was an active member of Arbor Hill Church of the Brethren. He enjoyed spending time with his family, working on lawn mowers, gardening, auctions, and butchering hogs with his brother Charlie every year in November. Obituary: Martha Lois Pool, Olney (Ill.) Daily Mail (Sept. 6, 2011) – Martha Lois Pool, 85, of Olney, Ill., died Sept. 3 at Piatt County Nursing Home in Monticello, Ill. She was a life-long member of Walnut Grove Church of the Brethren. She was a school teacher at a rural country school and also worked for many years as a mental health worker in Richland County. She retired at age 80 from her position as an elder abuse investigator. She married James Harlan Pool on June 27, 1947; he preceded her in death on August 14, 1994. Obituary: Harold W. Wampler, News Leader, Staunton, Va. (Sept. 5, 2011) – Harold Wayne Wampler Sr., 83, of Mount Sidney, Va., passed away Sept. 3 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. He was a life member and deacon at Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren. He was a dairy farmer and was an active member of the Mount Sidney Ruritian Club, where he held numerous positions and served as district governor. “David J. and Virginia Domer 65th anniversary,” Canton (Ohio) Repository (Sept. 4, 2011) – David J. and Virginia Domer of North Canton celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary Sept. 7. The former Virginia Culler and her husband were married Sept. 7, 1946, in East Nimishillen Church of the Brethren in North Canton, Ohio, by the Rev. Eldon Petry. Obituary Ruth J. Barnhart, Journal and Courier, Kentucky (Aug. 31, 2011) – Ruth J. Senesac Barnhart, 87, of Bardstown, Ky., died Aug. 29 at Flaget Memorial Hospital, Bardstown. She was a member of Pyrmont Church of the Brethren, where she was music director and a Sunday school teacher. She was involved with the family farm near Pyrmont, where she managed the egg operation, and assisted her husband in his aircraft maintenance business, B&B Aircraft Inc. She sang with the Gospel Tones Trio for 25 years, touring many Indiana churches. She and her husband were members of the Indiana Flying Farmers, and she was the 1974 Indiana Flying Farmer queen.
