Columbia City “Feeds the Need”

Feed the Need: Community meal raising funds for school supplies

A sign at Columbia City (Ind.) Church of the Brethren reminds passersby to “Feed the Need,” and with help from a $5,000 grant from the Brethren Faith in Action Fund additional signs will be purchased.

Feed the Need provides a community breakfast on the second Saturday of each month, except July. All donations for the breakfasts benefit a local nonprofit, with different groups chosen each month.

Feed the Need aligns with “Jesus in the Neighborhood.” It originated with a small group of people in the church who have a pas-sion for helping the community. With a church building addition in 2017, the congre-gation had the space. A group of people enjoy making breakfast. It seemed like a great com-bination.

Continued success will depend on partnerships that are fostered between the congregation, community, and nonprofits. In 2023, for example, donations of more than $1,000 were given to Faith Christian Academy. Another successful breakfast last year benefited Giving Gardens of Indiana, with members of the Giving Gardens’ board attending the breakfast. Those scheduled to benefit from breakfasts this year range from the Grace Lutheran Church Food Pantry to the Whitley County Council on Aging.
