Witness to the Host City

Kids’ Food Basket

Kids’ Food Basket exists to increase access to healthy food for children and families. Our core belief is that food is a right, not a privilege. Because that is not yet a reality, we mobilize human and financial resources to break down barriers that cause food insecurity. Our services include our flagship Sack Supper program, community-driven farming, family food provision and educational programming. Collectively, we are working toward realizing a hunger-free West Michigan for all.

Color a lunch bag at conference or at home

We will have plain paper bags on a table in the Exhibit Hall for you to color. These bags will we be used to pack the meals that Kid’s Food Basket distributes. You can color the bags at home before you bring them. Or consider having a church event where you collect the items and color the bags! Refrain from using paint, glitter, feathers or stickers, as they can come off in the food. Please keep in mind that many Sack Suppers will be going to public schools and therefore cannot contain religious or political messages.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace

Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) believes that a bed is a basic need for the proper physical, emotional, and mental support that a child needs. When it was brought to our attention that the need for beds went far beyond our own neighborhoods, we stepped up and took initiative. All children deserve a safe, comfortable place to lay their heads. Across the U.S., too many boys and girls go without a bed – or even a pillow – to sleep on. These children end up sleeping on couches, blankets, and even floors. This can affect their happiness and health. That’s where SHP comes in. We’re a group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling and delivering top-notch bunk beds to children and families in need. NO KID SLEEPS ON THE FLOOR IN OUR TOWN!®

Our Witness to the Host City will be twofold

  1. Collecting donations for Sleep in Heavenly Peace – both monetary gifts and bedding (see below)
  2. Hosting a bed build event in the Exhibit Hall on Saturday, July 6

How you can help with a donation

  • Bed in a Bag – for twin beds (the sets that include sheets, pillowcase, and comforters – this is easier for them than trying to match random donations of individual sheets, pillowcases, and comforters)
  • Pillows
  • New Quilts and Blankets – for twin beds (quilts can be handmade)
  • New Stuffed Animals

These items will be brought to worship on Thursday, July 4. Monetary contributions can be made by check during the worship offering or on the AC website offering page (link to come later).

How you can help with the bed build*

The bed building will take place in a back potion of the Exhibit Hall. All materials and tools will be provided by SHP. No experience is needed. Inexperienced volunteers are trained and supervised by experienced staff from SHP. All volunteers are required to sign an electronic SHP indemnification form.

*You must sign up for this event when you register online for Annual Conference prior to June 10! If you missed signing up when you registered, please email dnoffsinger@brethren.org to be added. There are two 2-hour shifts scheduled on Saturday, July 6:
Build #1 – 11:45 a.m. – 1:45 p.m.
Build #2 – 1:45 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. (for Non-Delegates only)
