January/February 2026

The I Am a Man memorial to the sanitation workers whose plight brought Martin Luther King Jr. to Memphis in 1968. It was in Memphis that he was assassinated April 4 at the Lorraine Motel. 
In April 2025, the historic Clayborn Temple, pictured in the background, was destroyed by arson. The church served as the city’s headquarters for the Civil Rights movement, especially the sanitation workers’ strike. “When marchers filled its sanctuary, it wasn’t just about better wages; it was about dignity,” said the National Civil Rights Museum, in a statement after the fire.
