They stood around a long table, checking contents of the kits and pulling out extra items to build new ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe chose to sign up for this service project because we like helping others,\u201d said Justin Kier. And even with an injured ankle, Gabe Hernandez used his crutches to work alongside his teammates.<\/p>\n<p>Another, larger group of volunteers walked down the street to the Geller Center for Spiritual Development, a non-profit that specifically focuses on creating space to encourage spiritual health for college students. They stained outdoor furniture, mowed the lawn, prepped a fundraising letter, and completed housed cleaning projects. \u201cThey did an incredible job mopping floors,\u201d said Laura Nelson, director of the center. \u201cThis group is incredible!\u201d While folding and stuffing envelopes, Olivia Hawbecker said she enjoys, \u201cHelping with whatever needs to be done to help keep our world beautiful. And it\u2019s fun to remember there are kind people who want to help!\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9003\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9003\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9003\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/10\/a-youth-takes-part-in-service-project.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/10\/a-youth-takes-part-in-service-project.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/10\/a-youth-takes-part-in-service-project-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9003\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><small>Photo by Nevin Dulabaum<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Several more service project workers went to the Turning Point, a 40-year-old nonprofit that exists to help at-risk teens and their families who have suffered from trauma or abuse. \u201cWe help kids who have had a hard upbringing,\u201d said director Scott VonBargen. \u201cBut these NYCers are good kids, and we appreciate them being here.\u201d Volunteers planted bushes in the front of the building, and scraped paint off a shed in the back. \u201cI like being outside,\u201d said Colleen Murphy, one of the youth. \u201cSo I thought this would be fun!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never know what you\u2019ll find in a thrift shop,\u201d said Kayla Means, who was serving with another group at Arc Thrift in Fort Collins. The youth unloaded and hung up clothes from more than 15 \u201cmelons,\u201d which are large containers that hold about 400 articles of clothing each. \u201cThe store was completely empty when we got here,\u201d said Paula Elsworth, a youth advisor. \u201cBut now it was filled with racks of hanging clothes!\u201d Gerta Thompson, the merchandise manager for Arc Thrift, sung the praises of the NYC volunteers. \u201cThey did an awesome job!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At an environmental landscaping project supported by the local industrial parks, a group of youth and advisors set to work replanting trees, great and small, in an effort that will help moderate the temperatures around the several ponds in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Another group, consisting of youth from Pennsylvania and Indiana, worked so fast at the Arc Thrift store in Loveland that the store\u2019s employee assigned to supervise them expressed amazement that they brought so much enthusiasm to the task that they finished far earlier than expected. The youth were found resorting clothes on the rack according to color and size. \u201cIt\u2019s fun to be taking our turn to help other people out,\u201d said one youth. \u201cIt will be easier for them to find what they need.\u201d Another added, \u201cWe\u2019re helping out the community.\u201d However, when asked if there was anything they felt like buying, members of these youth groups were unanimous that they bought name brands.<\/p>\n<div id=\"image-545284221\" class=\"templateComponent mceCmsPageletVA mceNonEditable\" style=\"float: right\">\n<div class=\"thumbnail\" style=\"margin-right: 10px;margin-bottom: 10px\">\n<div class=\"caption\" style=\"max-width: 482px\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_9004\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9004\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9004\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/10\/a-group-poses-at-one-of-the.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/10\/a-group-poses-at-one-of-the.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/10\/a-group-poses-at-one-of-the-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9004\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><small>Photo by Glenn Riegel<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>One\u00a0group was dropped off at a warehouse owned by a theater in Fort Collins, and were set to a number of tasks. One group of girls opened big tubs of paint to see if they were still useful. \u201cI\u2019m learning what a hammer\u2019s for,\u201d said one, who grimaced, then pried open a particularly stubborn can.<\/p>\n<p>Six youth sorted shoes, coats, belts, and dresses that would be used in plays and operas. \u201cWe\u2019re really contributing to the cultural life of Fort Collins,\u201d one said. Items that were unusable were thrown out. When asked if this would help her throw out her old clothes back home, another youth laughed. \u201cAre you kidding? Now I think I\u2019m a hoarder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the youth assigned to indoor work on this very hot day seemed to be doing very well, while those working on outdoor assignments required the five-gallon water jugs and bottles of water they carried.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212; Frank Ramirez and Mandy J.
