{"id":5751,"date":"2012-12-20T00:00:38","date_gmt":"2012-12-20T00:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/new.brethren.org\/news\/?p=5751"},"modified":"2018-11-03T20:18:00","modified_gmt":"2018-11-03T20:18:00","slug":"ncc-provides-resources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/2012\/ncc-provides-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"NCC Provides Resources for Churches to Address Gun Violence and Its Aftermath"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI have been inspired by the great outpouring of support and compassion I have seen in the faith community&#8217;s response to the devastating shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School,\u201d said Peg Birk, National Council of Churches transitional general secretary, in an NCC release this week. \u201cFrom prayer vigils to pastoral care resources, and from moving sermons to the many, many prayers for the families and community in Newtown&#8211;the outpouring of God&#8217;s love to this community through God&#8217;s people has been hope fulfilled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The National Council of Churches is making a number of the responses it has received\u00a0to Newtown tragedy available online, along with worship and action resources for churches to address gun violence and help parishioners deal with the aftermath of a tragedy that has affected the entire nation.<\/p>\n<p>A sampling of the <strong>responses and prayers<\/strong> from member communions of the NCC is available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncccusa.org\/sitemap\/SHworshipresources.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.ncccusa.org\/sitemap\/SHworshipresources.html<\/a> .<\/p>\n<p>Upcoming <strong>actions and resources on gun violence<\/strong> from NCC member churches is at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncccusa.org\/SHaction.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.ncccusa.org\/SHaction.html<\/a> .<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another new resource<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Made available through a joint effort of the NCC and the Presbyterian Church (USA) is the documentary film <strong>\u201cTrigger: The Ripple Effect of Gun Violence.\u201d<\/strong> Produced by David Barnhart of Presbyterian Disaster Assistance for the NCC, which distributes television programming through the Interfaith Broadcasting Commission, the film was released to NBC Television in mid-November for airing by network affiliate stations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrawing upon conversations with lawmakers, emergency room chaplains and surgeons, survivors and victims&#8217; families, former ATF officials, police officers, community leaders and others, \u2018Trigger: The Ripple Effect of Gun Violence\u2019 shares the story of how gun violence impacts individuals and communities and examines the \u2018ripple effect\u2019 that one shooting has on a survivor, a family, a community, and a society,\u201d said the release.
