{"id":5654,"date":"2012-11-28T00:00:23","date_gmt":"2012-11-28T00:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/new.brethren.org\/news\/?p=5654"},"modified":"2018-11-03T20:18:03","modified_gmt":"2018-11-03T20:18:03","slug":"childrens-disaster-services-continues-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/2012\/childrens-disaster-services-continues-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Children\u2019s Disaster Services Continues to Aid Families Recovering from Storm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5655\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/10\/bridges-sandy-300px.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"177\" \/>By the end of the day yesterday, Nov. 27, Children\u2019s Disaster Services (CDS) had six volunteers working at FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers&#8211;continuing the response that CDS has made to the \u201csuperstorm\u201d Sandy.<\/p>\n<p>The CDS teams that provided child care centers in American Red Cross shelters in New York and New Jersey following the storm have returned home, now replaced by a new set of volunteers serving at the FEMA centers in Mays Landing and Atlantic City, N.J.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the arrival of this new set of volunteers, 19 CDS volunteers served in New York and 15 served in New Jersey responding to Hurricane Sandy.<\/p>\n<p>FEMA has requested CDS support to help care for children at the Disaster Recovery Centers, while families apply for direct aid and complete paperwork. FEMA has told CDS that the centers will be open for several months, reported Roy Winter of Brethren Disaster Ministries. \u201cSo far our child counts are low and we are waiting to see if this changes over the next week, and visiting with FEMA to determine how long the response will occur,\u201d he said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The staff at Brethren Disaster Ministries has requested an allocation of up to\u00a0$10,000 from the Church of the Brethren\u2019s Emergency Disaster Fund (EDF) to provide housing, transportation, and meals for CDS volunteers responding in the FEMA recovery centers.<\/p>\n<p>The CDS work has been getting attention from the media. CDS associate director Judy Bezon was quoted in a \u201cUSA Today\u201d article picked up from the \u201cAsbury Park Press,\u201d at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/2012\/11\/16\/sandy-keep-things-light-kids\/1709407\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/2012\/11\/16\/sandy-keep-things-light-kids\/1709407<\/a> .
