{"id":3894,"date":"2011-12-29T00:00:19","date_gmt":"2011-12-29T00:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/new.brethren.org\/news\/?p=3894"},"modified":"2018-11-03T20:55:26","modified_gmt":"2018-11-03T20:55:26","slug":"ncc-condemns-attack-in-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/2011\/ncc-condemns-attack-in-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"NCC Condemns Attack on Worshipers in Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span id=\"alttext-container\"><img id=\"alttext-image\" width=\"16\" height=\"16\" align=\"left\" \/><span id=\"alttext\"><\/span><\/span>The National Council of Churches (NCC) has condemned the Christmas Day bombing of a Roman Catholic Church in Madella, Nigeria, as \u201cintrinsically evil.\u201d Incoming NCC president Kathryn Mary Lohre joined Pope Benedict XVI and other religious leaders in denouncing the terrorist acts that claimed the lives of 39 people and injured hundreds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe National Council of Churches deplores any attack on Christian communities anywhere in the world,\u201d Lohre said. \u201cBut more than that, we condemn any violent act so contrary to the common understanding of God\u2019s love as it is expressed among Christians, Muslims, and persons of all the major faith traditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lohre called on the council\u2019s member communions \u201cand all persons of good will to pray for the families in Madella who have lost loved ones, and to ask God\u2019s healing mercies for all who have been touched by this tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pope Benedict termed the attacks as \u201cabsurd.\u201d \u201cViolence is a path that leads only to pain, destruction, and death,\u201d Benedict said. \u201cRespect, reconciliation, and love are the only path to peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Responsibility for the attack was claimed by an Islamist extremist group Boko Haram.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212; Philip E.
