Mission and Ministry Board begins preparing for a prayerful search for his successor

David A. Steele has announced that he will conclude his service as General Secretary of the Church of the Brethren on Aug. 31, 2028, at the end of his current term.

Steele began serving as General Secretary in 2016. In October 2025, the denomination’s Mission and Ministry Board extended his term through August 2028. He has since decided that this will be his final term, concluding 12 years of service in the role.

Steele believes the time is right both for a new chapter in his own life and for new leadership to help guide the Church of the Brethren in the years ahead. Following his service as General Secretary, he looks forward to spending more time with family and continuing to serve the church and his community in other ways.

“Serving as General Secretary has been a tremendous privilege,” said Steele. “What has meant the most to me in this role is the opportunity to walk alongside people throughout the Church of the Brethren and witness their faith in action. The strength of the church isn’t found in any one person or position, but in the people and congregations who live out their faith every day. Their commitment to serving others and building community gives me great hope for the future of our church.”

The Mission and Ministry Board will lead the search and discernment process for the next General Secretary. The board will begin considering next steps at its Oct. 15-18 meeting, including a visioning conversation to inform the path forward, the General Secretary position description, and potential search committee structure and candidates.

“I am deeply grateful for David’s many years of service to the Church of the Brethren and the wider church,” said Kathy Mack, chair of the Mission and Ministry Board. “It has been a joy to work with him and to witness his commitment to the church firsthand. David and the board have important work ahead of us, and I look forward to continuing that work together while we begin the process of seeking the next General Secretary.”

Steele will continue serving as General Secretary through Aug. 31, 2028. The advance announcement provides time for a prayerful search and discernment process and preparation for the next General Secretary.

Additional information about the search will be shared as the Mission and Ministry Board makes decisions. Updates will be available through Brethren.org.
