{"id":27435,"date":"2026-07-01T21:45:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-01T21:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/?p=27435"},"modified":"2026-07-02T03:59:32","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T03:59:32","slug":"resolution-on-weapons-transfer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/2026\/resolution-on-weapons-transfer\/","title":{"rendered":"Resolution on weapons transfer is adopted by the 2026 Annual Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The delegate body of the 2026 Annual Conference on Wednesday afternoon, July 1, adopted a \u201cResolution on Weapons Transfer\u201d with a solid majority vote. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The paper cites Matthew 5:44b-45, <em>\u201cLove your enemies and pray for those who persecute you\u2026,\u201d<\/em> to call the Church of the Brethren to \u201cexamine and respond to the impacts of the arms industry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resolution reaffirms \u201cthe Church of the Brethren\u2019s commitment to peace as God\u2019s will and the call of Christ\u201d and states the church\u2019s \u201copposition to the US manufacturing and sale of weapons and urges the US government to halt the sale of arms to other countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One section of the resolution addresses the global impact of the US arms trade, noting that \u201cthe United States is currently the world\u2019s largest exporter of weapons, with 39 percent of global weapons imports in 2023 coming from the US.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"434\" height=\"289\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/Business-Voting-DSC_0565-byCherylBC-600px.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27436\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/Business-Voting-DSC_0565-byCherylBC-600px.jpg 434w, https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/Business-Voting-DSC_0565-byCherylBC-600px-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 434px) 100vw, 434px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>The delegate body throughout the Conference voted using green cards to signify support for a recommendation, and red cards to signify opposition. Photo by Cheryl Brumbaugh-Cayford<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another section addresses the Church of the Brethren\u2019s historic opposition to war and the defense industry, noting the church\u2019s centuries-long opposition to war and adherence to peacemaking. It also notes the church\u2019s stated opposition to particular types of weaponry including nuclear weapons and military drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The closing section offers recommendations for individuals, congregations, districts, and the denomination, ranging from educating about the US arms trade and the biblical call to peacemaking, to divesting from the arms industry, to public advocacy against US arms transfers and the defense industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resolution was brought by the Mission and Ministry Board of the Church of the Brethren and recommended for adoption by the Standing Committee of district delegates.
