This represents an expense reduction of $242,000 below the 2026 budgeted expenses based on a number of factors including an increase in rental income from a new tenant at the Brethren Service Center in New Windsor, Md.; a decrease in rental income from Eder Financial at the General Offices in Elgin, Ill.; a 2 percent cost-of-living increase in employee wages and salaries; and a decrease in cost for medical insurance benefits.

The board is expected to approve the full 2027 budget for all denominational ministries at its October meeting.

The board also approved an increase in the Ministry Enablement Contribution. This contribution, which is a percentage of restricted gifts such as donations to the Emergency Disaster Fund and the Global Food Initiative Fund, helps offset administrative costs of the related ministries. Yet we recognize that many people and communities continue to experience racism, discrimination, and exclusion. As followers of Christ, we are called to listen deeply to those experiences, to learn from them, and to join God’s work of reconciliation, justice, and peace.

For this reason, we lament the U.S. Supreme Court’s April 29, 2026, decision weakening key protections of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. For decades, this provision has helped protect against racial discrimination in voting and public participation. We are concerned this ruling may create new barriers for communities that have historically faced exclusion and may further limit their ability to participate fully in decisions that affect their lives and the common good.

In the 2007 Annual Conference statement, Separate No More (www.brethren.org/ac/statements/2007-separate-no-more), the Church of the Brethren affirmed God’s call to become a people united across racial, ethnic, and cultural differences. We recognize that living into that vision requires more than good intentions. It requires us to confront discrimination, build relationships across differences, and speak with courage when human dignity, justice, and peace are threatened. That commitment continues today through the Church of the Brethren’s strategic priority to “Seek God’s Racial Justice,” which calls us to identify and dismantle barriers that prevent us from becoming a community of all nations, peoples, and languages gathered in God’s presence.

The board recognized three members who are completing their terms: Barbara Daté (in top photo, with general secretary David Steele), Karen Shively Neff (above), and Joanna Wave Willoughby (below), who attended via Zoom.

Guided by those convictions, we join our voices with all who seek a society in which every person is valued, every voice is heard, and those most vulnerable to discrimination are protected. Their witness reminds us that the freedoms and responsibilities we share are not to be taken for granted. As followers of Christ, we recognize that the work of seeking peace, protecting the vulnerable, and pursuing the common good calls for continual commitment and prayerful discernment.

We pray for wisdom among our nation’s leaders and institutions, for renewed commitment to justice and full participation, and for the courage to live faithfully as disciples of Jesus Christ. This decision affects hundreds of thousands of people including an estimated 300 church members of Haitian background in about 7 congregations of the Church of the Brethren.

Behind every legal decision are real people—parents, children, grandparents, students, workers, neighbors, and faithful members of our churches whose lives have been shaped by hope, sacrifice, and perseverance.

As the Church, we lament with those who lament: “Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep” (Romans 12:15 NKJV). We recognize that many in our congregations are wondering what tomorrow will bring. Some fear separation from loved ones. Others worry about losing their work, their homes, or the stability they have spent years building.

Our faith does not call us to ignore suffering. It calls us to stand beside those who suffer.

Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly commands God’s people to welcome the stranger, defend the vulnerable, and seek justice with mercy (Leviticus 19:33-34, Micah 6:8, Matthew 25:35). Those commands remain unchanged today.

This is a moment for the Church to become even more fully the Body of Christ:

To pray with and for affected families.

To accompany those navigating difficult legal and practical decisions.

To resist fear with hope.

To bear one another’s burdens in tangible ways.

To continue advocating for policies that honor both human dignity and justice.

We also remember our brothers and sisters in Haiti, where violence, political instability, humanitarian crises, and widespread displacement continue to make daily life extraordinarily dangerous for many people.

Our hope is not rooted solely in court decisions or political systems. Our hope is rooted in Jesus Christ, who Himself knew what it meant to flee violence as a refugee child and who continually identifies Himself with the stranger.

To every Haitian family and all those living with fear today:

You are not forgotten. You are not alone. God loves you, and the Church must continue to walk with you.

May we have the courage to embody Christ’s compassion, pursue justice with humility, and remain steadfast in hope.

“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18, NRSV).

#MissionAndMinistryBoard #StrategicPlan #RacialJustice #LoveOurNeighbors #Discipleship #NewTestamentGiving

———-

Find more Church of the Brethren news:

Mission and Ministry Board adopts two statements on Supreme Court decisions, approves budget parameter for 2027

Revelation 7:9 Award is given to Wendy McFadden and Nancy Sollenberger Heishman

Standing Committee recommends adoption of four new business items, discusses relationship of the Church of the Brethren and Eder Financial

Supreme Court decision on TPS for Haitians and Syrians will affect hundreds of Church of the Brethren members

Kairos Center issues press statement on Supreme Court case in which Church of the Brethren joined amicus brief

The Church of the Brethren Mission and Ministry Board in its pre-Annual Conference meeting on Sunday, June 28, adopted two statements on Supreme Court decisions.

[1703
1258,3482,2482,2543,1787,1261,3153,12,2023,1135,3497,760,1266,2024,3649,638

post-27348","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-church-of-the-brethren-newsline","tag-annual-conference","tag-annual-conference-2026","tag-asylum","tag-budget","tag-finances","tag-general-secretary","tag-general-secretarys-office","tag-haiti","tag-immigration","tag-intercultural-ministries","tag-kathy-mack","tag-mission-and-ministry-board","tag-mmb","tag-refugees","tag-supreme-court","tag-syria
["GET
