Brethren Disaster Ministries has directed two $10,000 grants from the Church of the Brethren\u2019s Emergency Disaster Fund (EDF) to a flood relief program of ASIGLEH (the Church of the Brethren in Venezuela) and to the work of partner organization Child Life Disaster Relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Venezuela<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A grant of $10,000 has gone to ASIGLEH\u2019s flood relief program to provide food, water, and clothing for families affected by flooding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting June 24, Venezuela had experienced severe flooding caused by prolonged and intense rainfall. More than three days of torrential rains also caused landslides. The disaster directly affected 25,000 people in 8 states, taking 33 lives and displacing thousands, with dozens of people missing. Significant damage was done to infrastructure, including roads and bridges. In coastal and mountainous regions, mudslides cut off access to entire communities, complicating rescue and relief efforts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Child Life Disaster Relief is a partner organization to the Church of the Brethren’s Children’s Disaster Service (CDS).<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

ASIGLEH has reported that 10 congregations and many of their members were directly affected and has requested support to implement a plan that links providing flood relief with providing Bibles to those most vulnerable. ASIGLEH\u2019s response organizes volunteers to provide relief and support to 700 people in the 10 churches and their surrounding communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Child Life Disaster Relief<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

An additional grant of $10,000 supports the disaster relief training initiatives and deployment services of this partner organization to Children\u2019s Disaster Services (CDS). Child Life Disaster Relief was formed in 2016 and its partnership has increased the ability of CDS to expand the impact on the needs of children following disasters. For example, the partnership was beneficial in May 2024 when a volunteer who was certified with both organizations advocated for CDS to service in a resource center after a tornado hit Greenfield, Iowa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Child Life Disaster Relief has had an increase in requests from various organizations for training, resources, and expertise, and has requested funding for its training initiatives such as its \u201cJust-in-Time\u201d sessions for certified Child Life Specialists and its \u201cCompetently and Confidently Connect with Children After Crisis\/Disaster\u201d training program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
