Brubaker

Dr. Emerson Pierre, a family physician visiting from Haiti, spoke at Elizabethtown (Pa.) Church of the Brethren on Jan. 12. He works with the mobile medical clinics sponsored by the Church of the Brethren’s Haiti Medical Project.

Dr. Pierre reported that although work is no longer possible in southern Haiti, closer to the capital city of Port-au-Prince, because of dangerous gang activity and the risk of being kidnapped or having vehicles stolen, the mobile clinics continue in central, northern, and to some extent in western Haiti. He explained that the Haiti Medical Project currently operates out of a very functional center in San Raphael, a village in north-central Haiti, since the guest center in Croix-des-Bouquets was closed because of safety issues.

“The mobile medical clinics are a great blessing to the people of Haiti,” Dr. Pierre stated. He explained that if it were not for the Haiti Medical Project, people in remote villages may never have the opportunity to be evaluated by a medical professional. The mobile medical clinics are held in villages where l’Eglise des Freres Haitien (the Haitian Church of the Brethren) have congregations. The most common disorders treated are infections, including malaria, and hypertension in adults. He can see improvement in health indicators such as reduction of hypertension, on return visits to villages.

Dr. Pierre thanked everyone in the United States who supports and makes the work of the Haiti Medical Project possible.

— Paul E.
