{"id":22804,"date":"2023-09-29T18:24:30","date_gmt":"2023-09-29T18:24:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/?p=22804"},"modified":"2023-09-29T18:26:20","modified_gmt":"2023-09-29T18:26:20","slug":"new-book-new-peace-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/2023\/new-book-new-peace-network\/","title":{"rendered":"New book emerges from new international Anabaptist peace network"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>A new book titled <em>A Pilgrimage of Justice and Peace: Global Mennonite Perspectives on Peacebuilding and Nonviolence<\/em>, edited by Fernando Enns, Nina Schroeder-van \u2019t Schip, and Andr\u00e9s Pacheco-Lozano, is related to the emergence of the new Global Anabaptist Peace Network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The book includes chapters by Nathan Hosler, director of the Church of the Brethren\u2019s Office of Peacebuilding and Policy&#8211;which is a member of the network, and Scott Holland, Bethany Seminary professor emeritus, who is the Church of the Brethren and US representative on the steering committee of the network. Holland\u2019s chapter is titled \u201cMake Art, Not War: Toward an Aesthetics of Just Peace.\u201d Hosler\u2019s chapter is titled \u201cDrone Warfare, the Incarnation, and Historic Peace Church Peacemaking: Interfaith Engagement in Washington, DC.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Holland describes the network as \u201cvery active in inter-Anabaptist and ecumenical (World Council of Churches) peacebuilding. The steering committee is made up of country representatives from around the world. North America has a Canadian and a USA representative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The network is a formal follow up to organizing done by the historic peace churches (Church of the Brethren, Mennonites, and Quakers or Friends) and Anabaptist churches over several decades of association with the World Council of Churches and other ecumenical peacebuilding efforts. These included the WCC\u2019s Decade to Overcome Violence and Ecumenical Call to Just Peace Convocation in Kingston, Jamaica, as well as a series of Historic Peace Church consultations that were held on every continent except Antarctica.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"521\" Network.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMuch of this mutual work of seeking cultures of peace has been occasional and ad hoc, thus lacking continuity,\u201d Holland said. \u201cA new organization has been formed to better facilitate more consistent ongoing networking, conversation, and cooperation in peace education and action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Global Anabaptist Peace Network functions under the organizational umbrella and support of the Mennonite World Conference and includes in its membership various Anabaptist, Mennonite, and Brethren organizations and agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This past June, the network put together an organizational profile and held its first in-person international meeting on the campus of Eastern Mennonite University in
