Children\u2019s Disaster Services has three upcoming training events. Participants completing the 25-hour workshops will have the opportunity to become certified Children\u2019s Disaster Services volunteers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Lisa Crouch, Associate Director for Children\u2019s Disaster Services, Church of the Brethren CDS volunteer numbers are \u201cdown lower than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOnly about 20% of CDS certified volunteers are affiliated with the Church of the Brethren,\u201d she noted. \u201cWe would love to see that number increase again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upcoming workshops include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

April 14-15 <\/strong>at<\/strong> <\/strong>Ebenezer United Methodist Church (Newark, Del.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

April 15-16 <\/strong>at <\/strong>La Verne (Calif.) Church of the Brethren<\/p>\n\n\n\n

April 28-29 at <\/strong>Fruit and Flower Child Care Center (Portland, Ore.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants in the 25-hour workshops learn how to provide comfort and encouragement to children by offering the healing young children need in traumatic situations. They also learn to create a safe, friendly environment that gives children the chance to engage in therapeutic play activities designed to relieve stress and calm fears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshops utilize a variety of hands-on activities. Topics include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • shelter simulation (including an overnight stay)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • disasters (types and phases)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • children\n
      \n
    • needs after a disaster<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • how to respond to children in a healing manner<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • the role of play after a disaster<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • how to use play to start recovery in children<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Children\u2019s Disaster Services Centers\n

      • set up<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • operation<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • safety procedures<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • volunteers\u2019 roles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
