{"id":18794,"date":"2022-05-26T20:32:19","date_gmt":"2022-05-26T20:32:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/?p=18794"},"modified":"2022-05-27T00:13:22","modified_gmt":"2022-05-27T00:13:22","slug":"messenger-magazine-receives-five-awards-from-the-associated-church-press","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/2022\/messenger-magazine-receives-five-awards-from-the-associated-church-press\/","title":{"rendered":"Messenger magazine receives five awards from the Associated Church Press"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Jan Fischer Bachman<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Messenger<\/em>\u00a0won five awards in the 2021 <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theacp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Church Press<\/a> \u201cBest of the Church Press\u201d\u00a0competition, announced May 12, 2022.\u00a0 ACP is a professional organization &#8220;brought together by a common commitment to excellence in journalism as a means to describe, reflect, and support the life of faith and the Christian community.&#8221; This year\u2019s competition had over 800 entries from 67 organizations. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAward of Excellence\u201d equals first place, \u201cAward of Merit\u201d second place, and \u201cHonorable Mention\u201d third place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Messenger<\/em>&nbsp;2021 ACP awards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Science Writing for the World of Faith<\/strong>, Award of Merit<br>William Miller, \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/messenger\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/05\/Down-by-the-river-2021-4.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Down by the river: Developing a Brethren ecological identity<\/a>\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A judge commented, &#8220;Well-written story that weaves together the theology and practice of baptism, ecology, and the hope for redemption. Including humans as caretakers, those who have spoiled creation, and as part of creation gives a well-balanced view of the topic.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Convention or Meeting Coverage<\/strong>, Award of Merit<br>Cheryl Brumbaugh-Cayford, editor, \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/messenger\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/05\/Annual-Conference-2021-9.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Annual Conference goes virtual<\/a>\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;With denominations having to pivot away from business-as-usual to trying to create and maintain virtual community, <em>Messenger<\/em> found ways to capture both the factual business of the Annual Conference and the extraordinary effort to capture the feel of the Annual Conference. Well done!&#8221; wrote a contest judge. Photographers and writers contributing to the 2021 Conference coverage included Glenn Riegel, Frances Townsend, Frank Ramirez, and Traci Rabenstein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Column<\/strong>, Award of Excellence<br>Wendy McFadden, \u201cFrom the publisher\u201d<br>You can find many&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/messenger\/category\/from-the-publisher\/\">\u201cFrom the Publisher\u201d columns here<\/a>. Here are the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/messenger\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/05\/From-the-publisher-3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">three submitted to ACP<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Humor<\/strong>, Honorable Mention<br>Walt Wiltschek, writer, and Paul Stocksdale, designer, \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/messenger\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/05\/Humor-mascots-2021-6.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Brethren Mascots<\/a>\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An ACP judge wrote, &#8220;Very clever and original. The graphics added considerably to the overall impact of the piece.&#8221;  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Best in Class for Denominational or Other Special Interest Magazine<\/strong>, Award of Merit<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the judges commented: \u201cThe contents are a good example of what a denominational magazine should cover. . . . Thoughtfully planned. And even more. I enjoyed reading even though I\u2019m not Brethren. Writing and editing set the right tone for the publication\u2014neutral, informative, professional, free of jargon. . . . Very well done periodical.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/messenger\/subscribe\/\">Subscribe<\/a>\u00a0to read recent issues of the Church of the Brethren\u2019s award-winning magazine.
