{"id":1633,"date":"2009-09-10T00:00:20","date_gmt":"2009-09-10T00:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/new.brethren.org\/news\/?p=1633"},"modified":"2018-09-03T04:25:29","modified_gmt":"2018-09-03T04:25:29","slug":"today-at-noac-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/2009\/today-at-noac-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Today at NOAC"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1561\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/09\/noac-conference.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"103\" \/>NOAC 2009<br \/>\nNational Older Adult Conference of the Church of the Brethren<\/h2>\n<h2>Lake Junaluska, N.C. &#8212; Sept. 7-11, 2009<\/h2>\n<h6><strong>Thursday,\u00a0Sept. 10, 2009\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h6>\n<table style=\"height: 2403px\" width=\"414\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Quote of the Day:<br \/>\n<\/strong>&#8220;One thing I like about the Church of the Brethren is that it refuses to retreat from the culture.&#8221; <em>&#8212; Mike McKeever, a professor at Judson College in Elgin, Ill., and a keynote speaker on the topic, &#8220;Wisdom on the Road,&#8221; referencing\u00a0imagery from the book of Proverbs\u00a0of the Lady Wisdom standing at the crossroads<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Overview of the Day:<br \/>\n<\/strong>On Thursday,\u00a0Sept. 10, an early morning\u00a0&#8220;Hike for Haiti&#8221; gathered\u00a0some 175\u00a0NOAC participants for a walk around Lake Junaluska, to raise funds for\u00a0the Church of the Brethren mission in Haiti and theological education there.\u00a0Morning Bible study led by Bob Neff\u00a0preceded a\u00a0keynote session with\u00a0Mike McKeever, who\u00a0gave a presentation on\u00a0&#8220;Wisdom on the Road&#8221; with stories from the\u00a0gospel of Luke and contemporary film, sponsored by Resource Partners.\u00a0A service project to complete and pack kits for those affected by disasters&#8211;hygiene and school kits and clean-up buckets&#8211;headed an afternoon of recreation, interest groups, craft workshops, and other activities.\u00a0Ever-popular Church of the Brethren\u00a0singers Andy and Terry Murray\u00a0gave a\u00a0concert in the evening, sponsored by MAX (Mutual Aid eXchange). To close the day, it was Bethany Seminary&#8217;s turn\u00a0to host\u00a0an alumni gathering and ice cream social.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOAC Bits and Pieces<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Final registration number: <\/em>928<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Hike for Haiti&#8221; results:<\/em> Approximately 175 walkers have raised more than $3,130 for theological education of Brethren ministers in Haiti.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Share to Shear,&#8221; the NOAC News fundraiser:<\/em> $720 raised by the shaving of Chris Stover Brown&#8217;s beard<\/p>\n<p><em>Service project record: <\/em>A NOAC record was set today for the collection of Church World Service kits\u00a0for disaster relief.\u00a0 A total of 1,299 kits were boxed up to be taken\u00a0in the back of a\u00a0pick-up truck to the Brethren Service Center in New Windsor, Md. There\u00a0they will be processed, warehoused, and shipped by the Church of the Brethren&#8217;s Material Resources program on behalf of a number of ecumenical partners. The total included 4 clean-up buckets, 535 personal hygiene kits, and 760 kits of school supplies.<\/p>\n<h2>NOAC Story of the Day<\/h2>\n<p>This afternoon a special\u00a0interest group led by David and Maria Huber, two older adult\u00a0Brethren Volunteer Service workers, told\u00a0the old and new story of\u00a0the\u00a0Church of the Brethren mission in\u00a0Lybrook, a Navajo community in New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>The Lybrook Mission was started by the Church of the Brethren\u00a0in 1952. Since then it has done significant work including sharing the Gospel, helping to combat alcoholism, providing education and medical care, and\u00a0meeting other\u00a0needs.<\/p>\n<p>With a greater government role in education and health care in recent years, the mission is turning its focus to community development,\u00a0and a group of families from\u00a0Western Plains District have taken responsibility for the life and work of the new Lybrook Community Ministries.<\/p>\n<p>The group is renovating campus buildings at Lybrook, and is seeking another family to live and volunteer there. The group also encourages Brethren to &#8220;visit Lybrook to see for yourself.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A new brochure says,\u00a0&#8220;Renew your previous connections or build new ones. Spend time. Do a retreat. Explore the abundant beautiful (natural) resources of the area.
