“Death of Tabor football player spurs alcohol debate,” Hutchinson (Kan.) News and Topeka (Kan.) Capital Journal (April 28, 2013) – McPherson College and Tabor College are only about 30 miles apart, two tight-knit small Kansas colleges both boasting more than 600 students with foundations built on Christian principles — McPherson College chartered by Church of the Brethren leaders and Tabor College, the Mennonite Brethren Church. “Ex-school board member pleads guilty to corruption,” Pittsburgh (Pa.) Tribune Democrat (April 26, 2013) – A former school board member and former deacon at a Church of the Brethren congregation pleaded guilty Friday in Somerset County (Pa.) court to corruption of minors. Brian Scott Eppley, 57, of Davidsville, entered the plea to corruption of minors in four cases. He also pleaded guilty to unlawful contact with a minor in another case, authorities said. Obituary: Helen M. Fisher, (April 16, 2013) – Helen M. Fisher, 93, died April 14 at Lost Creek Care Center. She was a member of County Line Church of the Brethren, Harrod, Ohio. She had been organist and pianist at Elm Street Church of the Brethren for more than 20 years. She was born Aug. 23, 1919. On July 1, 1940, she married Henry S. Fisher, who died Dec. 7, 1995. “Lancaster Brethren Preschool celebration to feature free Steven Courtney concert,” Manheim Township (Pa.) News (April 16, 2013) – The Lancaster Brethren Preschool in Manheim Township, Pa., is throwing a 40th birthday party and concert featuring children’s performing artist Steven Courtney of Lititz, Pa. Obituary: Bernice Marie Oakes, Martinsville (Va.) Media (April 14, 2013) – Bernice Marie Oakes, 80, of Martinsville, VA., died April 13 at her home. Born Sept. 13, 1932, in Pittsylvania County, Va., she was the wife of the late Harold Oakes. She was a member of Boones Chapel Church of the Brethren and was a graduate of Glade Hill High School. “Frederick Church of the Brethren to host 3-on-3 basketball tournament,” The Gazette, Maryland (April 11, 2013) – Frederick (Md.) Church of the Brethren will hold a three-on-three basketball tournament on Sunday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The tournament, held at Tuscarora High School, at 5312 Ballenger Creek Pike, Frederick is open to high school boys in grades nine through 12. “Gunmen Storm Church During Service in Maiduguri,” Channels Television, Nigeria (April 7, 2013) – Gunmen suspected to be the radical Islamic sect; Boko Haram today launched an attack on a local Church of the Brethren–Ekklesiyar Yan’uwa a Nigeria (EYN) in Maiduguri the Borno State capital while the Sunday service was in progress. Today’s incident marks the first time that an attack will be launched on a church in the Maiduguri metropolis in broad daylight during Sunday service since the Boko Haram insurgence heightened in the area.
