“Celebrating the Church of the Brethren’s 300th Anniversary in 2008″
(Nov. 6, 2008) — The National Council of Churches 2008 General Assembly will meet in Denver, Colo., on Nov. 11-13 on the theme, “Jesus said…Whoever is not against you is for you” (Luke 9:50). The assembly also is the annual meeting of Church World Service.
The elected Church of the Brethren representatives to the assembly are Elizabeth Bidgood-Enders, J.D. Glick, and Illana Naylor. Church of the Brethren staff members also will be attending: Stan Noffsinger, general secretary, and Becky Ullom, director of Identity and Relations.
Bekah Houff, a Brethren Volunteer Service worker in the church’s Youth and Young Adult Office, will serve as one of the young adult stewards for the event.
The assembly will be presided over by NCC president Archbishop Vicken Aykazian, who represents the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern), and will be composed of delegates and visitors from the 35 member communions of the NCC and CWS.
In addition to worshiping together, and dealing with a number of items of business, the NCC assembly will celebrate the council’s 100th anniversary this year. The NCC traces its origins to the founding of the Federal Council of Churches in Dec. 1908.
