The Church of the Brethren Office of Peacebuilding and Policy works on matters of public policy, social concern, and peace theology by advocating in Washington D.C., and organizing Church of the Brethren members and congregations to act on issues of concern for the denomination. Areas of focus include U.S. foreign policy with a particular focus on matters of war and peace, racial justice, climate change, immigration policy, and food insecurity. Areas of regional or country focus align with the global Church of the Brethren and matters of particular concern within U.S. foreign policy such as militarized geopolitical competition, nuclear war, drone warfare, and arms sales. As part of its deep involvement in policy work and peacemaking, the Office of Peacebuilding and Policy works with a wide network of professionals and people with expertise in politics, peace theology, and advocacy. As this project offers you direct involvement in policy and advocacy work, connections and experiences you gain may be valuable for your future development in politics, peacemaking, or related fields.

Duties and Responsibilities:

he Associate works with the director of the Office of Peacebuilding and Policy, Nathan Hosler, to bring the voice of the Church of the Brethren to government officials, related organizations, and bodies. They also participate in ecumenical, interfaith and advocacy coalitions and policy working groups and organize Brethren members, congregations, districts, and national staff around issues of concern for the denomination. As the office covers a range of policy fields, the Associate is offered the opportunity to choose from different policy issues and proceed as facilitator in those in his capacity. Specific responsibilities include assisting with developing outreach and advocacy for a variety of issues and initiatives, developing appropriate educational advocacy materials based on scripture and Brethren policy, helping engage Brethren members, and engaging in research, writing, outreach strategizing and event organizing. The Associate also engages in general administrative work, social media outreach, and website designing and should be familiar with social media platforms as well as programs like Canva, Word, and Zoom.
