By Deb Ziegler \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0While interviewing a family at Masaka, an internally displaced persons care center in Nigeria, I learned about the needs of one father.\u00a0 I asked him what his needs are.\u00a0 He said he would like his children to go to school and he needs a job.\u00a0 I asked what he did for a job before and he said he grew onions and sold them.\u00a0 Now my face and my heart demonstrated compassion as I processed this information.\u00a0 But my mind was thinking:\u00a0 I saw many people selling onions along the road, who would buy your onions?\u00a0 Everyone around you is in crisis, who has money to buy your onions?\u00a0 These were my thoughts at the \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 moment.<\/p>\n

I also learned about the people returning to their homes in the northeast.\u00a0 They needed to plant their gardens kilometers\u00a0 away from the village for the safety of the village.\u00a0 The military could not protect them if the corn fields are close to the houses, because they can not see the enemy approaching.\u00a0 I grow all my own vegetables for the year in my garden. This summer as\u00a0 I worked each morning weeding and harvesting, often in the\u00a0 company of my neighbor, I prayed for my Nigerian brothers and sisters.\u00a0 I was thankful for peacefulness of my garden, listening to birds singing and often watching the sun rise.\u00a0 Thankful I did not have to look over my shoulder to see if I was safe.\u00a0\u00a0 And each week as I heard of people in Nigeria being slaughtered as they tended their garden,\u00a0 I was brought to tears. Random weekly attacks, stealing produce, burning crops as I peacefully filled my pantry for the coming winter.<\/p>\n

I harvested my onions and remembered the father who needed a job selling onions to support his family.\u00a0 I used my last onion one day in October and I just started to laugh\u2026.Who would buy your onions I thought\u2026I would\u2026. From now til next August.\u00a0 A few weeks later I was frying up some of my store bought onions, while also cleaning out the refrigerator.\u00a0 I was feeling rather sad about the spoiled\u00a0 food I was throwing away, thinking about Nigeria and the people starving to death each week, when I smelled the burning onions.\u00a0 CRAP, \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 now I need to buy another one of your onions! \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Once again I was humbled by an onion.\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
