Photograph of Charles Schulz

Charles Schultz, the creator of the comic strip Peanuts. (n.d., ca. 1955-1963)

Recently, the BHLA received several boxes of records from the Brethren Service Center in New Windsor, MD. A large portion of these records originated with the now defunct Brethren Service Center in Modesto, CA. Among the usual photographs of the center and its activities lay one of Charles Schulz, the creator of the comic strip Peanuts. Schulz moved to California in 1958 where he built his first studio. During this time, he was featured in the junior high magazine Friends co-published by the Church of the Brethren and the Evangelical United Brethren Church. In 1970s, Howard Royer, an employee of the Church of the Brethren General Offices, interviewed Schulz as a program feature of the annual convention of the Religious Public Relations Council in Indianapolis.
