History:
N. J. Baugher served as General Secretary of the General Brotherhood Board, succeeding Raymond R. Peters, from 1952 until his death in April of 1968. During his administration, he served crucial roles in planning the 200th anniversary celebration in 1958, in the relocation in 1959 of the central offices from 22 South State Street to the new building on 1451 Dundee Avenue, and in overseeing the General Brotherhood Board reorganization study from 1965 to 1968. In addition, Baugher was active in the National Council of Churches where he served as recording secretary 1957-1960 and as vice president 1963-1966, as chairman of the Division of Life and Work and of the General Planning and Program Committee, and as co-chairman of the Interreligious Anti-Poverty Committee. Active also in the World Council of Churches, he was a member of the Central Committee from 1961 to 1968 and of the Planning Committee for the 1968 Assembly. He was succeeded by S. Loren Bowman in 1968.
Description of the Records:
The Baugher records consist of numerous subject folders and several subseries including, records of Baugher's participation in the National Council of Churches, the World Council of Churches, items relating to the General Brotherhood Board, and the Reorganization Study of 1965-1968. This series also contains a folder of General Secretary Files belonging to R. R. Peters for the years 1947-52 and a folder of office communications which are about half from R. R. Peters and half from N. J. Baugher.
Provenance: These records came from three sources. Some were transferred to BHLA along with the Robert W. Neff (General Secretary, 1978-1986) records (1989.020), some were found in filing cabinets in the vault, and one file was with unprocessed records collected in 1988 (1988.010).
Restrictions: none.
Separations: The following were separated and placed within existing files in the archives or discarded if duplicates were present in already existing files. (1) From the Brotherhood Interpretation folder several mimeographed interpretation folders and flyers, including A Five Year Report. (2) From the folder, Conferences: The Nature of the Unity We Seek, Eugene C. Blake, A Proposal Toward the Reunion of Christ's Church; Oberlin Reports: The Nature of the Unity We Seek; George L. Hunt, A Guide To Christian Unity; "A Plan For a United Church," from The Ecumenical Studies Series, and (3) a mimeographed paper of the NCC entitled The Churches and Persistent Pockets of Poverty in the U.S.A.
