{"id":2078,"date":"2026-03-20T20:50:36","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T20:50:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/bdm\/?page_id=2078"},"modified":"2026-05-08T18:31:28","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T18:31:28","slug":"nc-md-short-term","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.brethren.org\/bdm\/nc-md-short-term\/","title":{"rendered":"Western NC &amp; Western MD Short-term Response"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>BDM will be hosting a two-week short-term response in\u00a0<strong>Western North Carolina<\/strong>\u00a0the weeks of\u00a0<strong>April 12-18, 2026\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>April 19-25, 2026<\/strong>. This is in response to Hurricane Helene which devastated this part of North Carolina in September 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Housing, meals, tools and transport to project sites will be provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We will be working with Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church (WNCCUMC).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work will be on a new build with some possible home repairs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Housing will be at <strong>Ashe County Baptist Campground<\/strong><strong>, <\/strong><strong>1418 Paul Goodman Rd, Fleetwood, NC 28626<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meals are prepared in the kitchen at the housing site. Volunteer groups are asked to include an assistant household leader\/cook. Volunteers will be asked to help with kitchen cleanup.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Groups must send registration forms to <\/strong><a href=\"mailto:BDMproject2helene@gmail.com\"><strong>BDMproject2helene@gmail.com<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong><strong>at least 2 weeks prior to your scheduled trip.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Background checks are required <\/strong><strong>by our partners for all leaders and volunteers. The background check forms will be provided to your District Disaster Coordinator and\/or your trip leader. These must be returned to the BDM office at <\/strong><a href=\"mailto:kgingerich@brethren.org\"><strong>kgingerich@brethren.org<\/strong><\/a><strong> at least 2 weeks prior to your scheduled trip.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Upon arrival, BDM Project Leaders will welcome you and collect any incomplete paperwork. They will orient you to the project, covering such topics as house rules, work schedule, safety, tools, daily devotions, expectations, etc. Orientation does not begin until all participants arrive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Email: <a href=\"mailto:BDMproject2helene@gmail.com\"><strong>BDMproject2helene@gmail.com<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>BDM will also be hosting a one-week response in <strong>Allegany County,<\/strong> <strong>Western Maryland. <\/strong>This is in response to a flash flooding event that occurred in the afternoon on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, and resulted in extensive damage throughout the county. Over 5&#8243; of rain fell in a short period of time in a steep mountainous region.&nbsp; The result was fast, forceful waters overflowing the banks of creeks and rivers, causing significant damage to property, homes, businesses, roads and utilities. The swift water rose to the second floor of a school causing 200 children and adults to be evacuated by boat and flooding the cars of all the staff in the parking lot. Almost 150 households received support from voluntary organizations to muck and clean out their homes, with 266 homes experiencing some form of damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We will be working with Western Maryland Long-term Recovery Group.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Housing will be at <strong>Savage Mountain Youth Center, 164 Freedom Lane, Lonaconing, MD 21539<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Send registration forms to <\/strong><a href=\"mailto:BDMproject2helene@gmail.com\"><strong>BDMproject2helene@gmail.com<\/strong><\/a><strong>at least 2 weeks prior to your scheduled trip.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Upon arrival, BDM Project Leaders will welcome you and collect any incomplete paperwork.
