Forming and educating stewards

We cannot choose "whether or not to be stewards... We are stewards. What we can choose is what kind of steward we will be."
Christian Stewardship: Responsible Freedom
Annual Conference Statement, 1985

As followers of Jesus, we seek to live full and generous lives — lives that reflect our gratitude for all of God’s gifts to us — gifts encompassing all of our living:

  • from our health in body, spirit and soul
  • our time
  • God’s creation
  • our talents and spiritual gifts
  • our finances
  • our relationships
  • to the amazing mystery of Jesus’ life.

Striving to be faith-filled and faithful stewards, we try to live lives that carefully tend or manage all of life.

“Baptized in Stewardship” event - POSTPONED

Future date to be determined. Inquiries can be made to congregationallife@brethren.org.

The story is told of emperor Charlemagne who had his army baptized: He instructed them to hold their swords above the water so their arms would still be free to do as he wished in battle. This “withholding approach” is often applied to our faith, but stewardship is about getting soaked.

The Rev. Philip and Ms. Janet Jamieson (CPA), professors at Dubuque University, will share “immersion perspectives” on ministry and money from theological and practical viewpoints. Sessions will include:

  1. The Problem of Money in the Church — money in the Bible, and the power of money.
  2. Expanding the Money Conversation — integrating faith and work, and spiritual companionship.
  3. Strengthening Money Leadership — financial understanding, transparency, and practices of clergy.

Stewardship events
Geographically clustered workshops or retreats are available from our staff. Interactive and reflective in nature, they can focus on whole-life stewardship, age appropriate formation activities, legacy choices, and generosity (scarcity vs. abundance). To schedule a retreat or event for a cluster of congregations or your district, please contact Mandy Garcia, coordinator of Donor Invitation.
